A Whistle in The Woods DVD Case and Contents BPA 2023 Submission
This is a project that was intended for submission for The BPA Visual Design Team competition. In this project I was paired with 3 other students to come up with an idea for a made up movie concept then create the DVD case and other promotional designs. In this project I was tasked with creating the case as well as all the contents inside the case.
I was thrilled when I found out that I was going to be in charge of making the DVD case for this project! For years I've made fan made movie and video game cases/posters so this was right up my alley! I was even more thrilled to find that everyone in my team was onboard with the idea of doing a horror movie as this was my specialty! I stayed up late so many nights drafting ideas and designs to make this thing look as legit as possible! I wanted this DVD case to look super eerie but have a very 70's posterized style that would capture that almost retro feel. Lucky for me I have a massive collection of older horror DVDs and VHs at home so I kept many of them nearby for inspiration! After all the work I put on this case I can see I was very pleased with the end result!
Something I think people nowadays forget is that DVDs used to almost always have little book inserts and to me this was one of the coolest features. The project didn't call for this but I figured it would be super cool to add especially if I wanted this thing to be as legit as possible! For the design I decided to keep it pretty minimalistic compared to the actual case but still keep up that eerie vibe.
Similarly to the front of the booklet I kept the inside pretty minimal. I thought incorporating the deer skull logo that I had used for the front of the case into a camera would be super cool especially since the film was supposed to be found footage! I also took inspiration from the Blair Witch Project missing persons photos to use for the inside of the booklet! Shout out to my partner and friends for letting me use their images as missing persons photos! It's a very small addition but I feel like it made it that much more awesome!
One of the most important parts of DVD design is none other that the DVD Disc itself! I played with a few ideas for this one but I felt ultimately echoing the case cover would be a great move! It has that consistent look with just enough changes to feel different.
This project used a whole of Illustrator's handy Image Tracing Tool if you couldn't tell! While much of the project was made in Illustrator I used Photoshop a decent amount to create a majority of the graphics before taking them over to Illustrator and applying Image Trace on them! I am still so happy with how this project turned out and it sure took a whole lot of love and even more layers!
